This blog will enlighten you on the essential facts about carp feeding behaviours, particularly during winter. We will discuss the debate on what carp bait to use and whether carp feed in winter with scientific evidence.

Carp Eating Facts You Should Know

Carp navigate their underwater world using strong taste and smell senses. Researchers at the State Fish Laboratory at Livingston Manortested and observed the reactions of carp to 115 flavours and many types of food. In the experiment, carp showed a remarkable ability to detect oils and most water-soluble spices, but they didn’t bat an eye at alcohol and salt. These underwater munchers use special teeth and head bones to crush and munch on a variety of foods. It’s like they have taste buds in their throats, making them open to a colourful feast, as long as it’s chewable. Even blind carp don’t miss out on the foodie fun. They can still snag speedy snacks using touch and suction, showing off their adaptable feeding skills.

However, studies also suggest that carp have different sensory preferences throughout various seasons. Each carp could have its own quirks, adding a touch of individuality to their feeding habits.

Winter Bait Debate: Live Bait or Boilies?

The age-old debate among anglers continues: Should we use live bait or opt for the silent allure of boilies and pellets during the winter months?

In the wild, carp easily find carb-loaded goodies like plants and seeds during the summer. However, when winter hits, these food sources dwindle, making carp more likely to crave protein-rich snacks like worms (which boast a whopping 80% protein content). Despite a significant metabolic slowdown in winter, carp avoid going overboard on protein. Their adaptive behaviour kicks in, guiding them to take a snack break when temperatures plummet to extreme lows.

Carp Can Still Be Active in Winter!

Many anglers believe carp stay inactive in winter as they do while some are curious about the necessity of winter fishing.

Scientists, however, took a closer look at this assumption at a fish farm in Central Europe. Using implanted radio frequency telemetry devices, they tracked the activities of 14 carp over three consecutive winters in a single pond. Contrary to popular belief, the research unearthed a different reality – carp remain relatively active during winter, and their activity levels are positively correlated with water temperature. Surprisingly, the study identified feeding behaviour in carp even when the water temperature hit as low as 3.1℃.

These findings challenge the traditional notion of carp being lethargic in winter and open up new possibilities for anglers keen on trying their luck during the colder months. Hit the bank fellow anglers you still have the chance to hear the buzzers scream in winter!

Stay tuned as we delve deeper into the secrets of winter carp behaviour, debunking myths and offering insights for successful cold-weather angling!

The article explores the natural diet of carp in the wild, encompassing various food sources such as aquatic vegetation, leeches, invertebrates, freshwater clams, fruit, detritus, insects, crayfish, and even other fish. Carp exhibit a diverse palate and rely on an array of nourishing options to sustain their substantial size.

In a tranquil bay, a picturesque scene unfolded as a group of carp glided gracefully through the shallow waters. The serene atmosphere was accompanied by the elegant dance of sediment particles rising from the clear bottom. It was in this peaceful moment that a contemplation arose regarding the natural sustenance on which carp rely in their untamed habitat. Despite their familiarity with an assortment of artificial baits like corn, boilies, pellet baits, and scented attractants used to lure them, the question of the carp’s reliance on native food sources lingered in the air.

Aquatic vegetation, a telltale sign of carp feeding in the wild, decorated the surface of the water. As they feasted, the carp would stir up the sandy floor, dislodging plants from their rooted abode and causing them to drift atop the water. The carp would consume not just the tender roots, but also the sturdy stalks and nourishing seeds of aquatic vegetation.

Leeches, those cunning creatures, were not spared from the carp’s voracious appetite. Just like their piscine counterparts, carp too revelled in the opportunity to indulge in these slippery morsels. I learned from avid anglers that even imitation leech baits have managed to tempt unsuspecting carp.

In their quest for sustenance amidst dense vegetation, carp turned their attention away from the greens themselves towards the invertebrates that sought refuge among the leaves, stems, and branches.

Freshwater clams and zebra mussels, encased in their protective shells, provided a satisfying challenge for the carp’s powerful molars. With a determined crunch, the carp fractured the shells, revealing the delectable flesh within.

Snails, with their adorned shells, and other delectable crustaceans were met with the same fate. The carp, armed with their robust molar teeth, swiftly crushed the protective barriers that shielded these delicacies from most predators.

Fruit-laden trees gracefully leaning over the water lured carp to their shores. Whether it be succulent berries or crunchy nuts, these arboreal offerings became irresistible temptations. Even fly fishermen discovered success by employing artful imitation mulberry flies in their pursuit of carp.

Detritus, the decaying remnants of plant matter that gathered on the water’s bed, beckoned carp with its hidden treasures. Found in the calmer waters where fast currents deposited their bounty, the detritus became a buffet for carp. With their specialized mouths, they sifted through this organic debris, extracting delectable invertebrates and edible plant materials, while exuding the discarded remains.

On tranquil days, carp could be observed leisurely roaming the shallows. Gently breaking the water’s surface, they would create ripples as they suctioned in unsuspecting dragonflies, damselflies, and any other hapless insects resting above the liquid realm.

Being bottom dwellers, carp naturally sought out their fellow inhabitants of the depths – crayfish. These relatively sizable crustaceans enticed the carp, becoming preferred targets within their menu.

Even other fish, alive or deceased, were not exempt from the carp’s appetite. Observations abound of these magnificent creatures partaking in their piscine brethren. Anglers themselves have successfully employed imitation minnow baits to entice and conquer carp.

The substantial size of carp necessitates regular and substantial sustenance, which elucidates their diverse palate and their propensity for sampling objects before committing to consumption. And thus, in the ethereal realm of the bay, the carp embraced a tapestry of natural nourishment as they continued their underwater journey.

We take a look at some of the best cheap carp bait available and where to buy it from.

Carp fishing is a passion for most of us and that passion can burn a pretty big hole in our pockets. Bait is the one thing we can not do without, it’s probably the biggest annual expense for most carp anglers. With leading boilie brands costing around £11 per kilo, it’s easy to see how the costs can spiral out of control over the course of a season.

In this article, we explore some of the best cheap carp bait available and look at where you can purchase it from. Cutting the cost of your carp bait and looking at cheaper alternatives can also help you land a few more fish as wary carp have become accustomed to seeing the same baits over and over on pressured waters.

Particles & pellets are a proven cheap carp bait

Particles have been catching carp for decades, hemp, maize and tiger nuts have accounted for some of the biggest carp ever caught. Previously, preparing particles yourself involved soaking and boiling baits. Not only was this time-consuming but it required extra space in your house for storage. Thankfully, many suppliers now offer a ready-prepared particle service delivered directly to your door. They offer some of the best readily available cheap carp bait on the market today.

My favourite mix is a combination of Hemp, Maize, Maples, Red Dari, Whole Tigernuts, Black Rapeseed, Crushed Peanuts, White peas, Groats and Sweetcorn. It’s perfect for spodding and heavy baiting of areas. I always have a few KG of this in my freezer and have caught from everywhere I’ve used it.

Starmer cheap carp boilies

Boilies are the staple choice for most carp anglers. Frozen baits from the likes of Mainline, Sticky Baits, Dynamite and CC Moore are some of the most popular boilies on the market today, but they are also the most expensive. Even when bought in bulk these baits can still cost £8-11 a kilo.

There are alternative cheap carp baits from lesser-known brands such as Starmer. Starmer Baits are one of the oldest boilie manufacturers in the UK. They have been making baits since 1986 and their boilies have landed uncountable carp from across the continent.

Combine these boilies with the particle mixes above to get a varied selection of cheap carp baits that will catch fish from any venue.

Starmer Baits also offer a range of matching pellets, mixes, glugs and liquids.

Their boilies come in a variety of flavours including;

Banana cream, milk protein.
Caribbean, milk protein.
Raspberry ripple, milk protein.
Tutti fruitti, milk protein.
White chocolate, milk protein.
Honey nut, sweet birdseed.
Strawberry cream, sweet birdseed.
Tiger nut & maple, sweet birdseed.
Tigerfish, sweet birdseed.

Bio multi vit, fishmeal & betaine.
Coconut cream, fishmeal & betaine.
Garlic sausage, fishmeal & betaine.
Halibut & tuna, fishmeal & betaine.
Monster squid, fishmeal & betaine.
Bio c.p.2 amino, green lip mussel.
Bloodworm & tuna, green lip mussel.
Green lip mussel, green lip mussel.
Sweet plum seed, green lip mussel.

You can buy a 5KG bag of fresh ready-made boilies with free shipping for just £35.

They also offer a fantastic “cut-offs” package deal which is perfect for combining with spod mixes. This 5kg deal of mixed flavours & colours includes off-cuts and overruns from their boilie range. No need to freeze either as these cut-offs are supplied in 1 x 5kg bags. Priced at just £23.50 with free shipping. These are fantastic value cheap carp baits.

Vitalin Original is a great cheap carp bait

Vitalin is nutritionally balanced dog food which comes in a traditional muesli style that is ideal for soaking and using as ground bait or adding to spod mixes. People have been using Vitalin for years and it was popular in the big carp scene in the early 90s thanks to its cheap price and ease of use.

Simply soak overnight with boiling water, and play around with different levels of water to suit your needs. You can either make a sloppy, cloudy mixture or a firmer mixture with less water that is perfect for making into balls and catapulting out. I suggest mixing Vitalin with a particle mixture such as the Monster Mix to bulk it out. I also add crushed and whole boilies to my Vitalin mixes to produce high-quality cheap carp bait.

Buy a 15kg dry bag for just £26 which will produce around 30kg of finished bait. That’s less than £1 per kilo!

Pigeon Conditioner

Pigeon conditioner with aniseed (also known as Red Band) is a fantastic cheap carp bait which can prompt frenzied feeding at the right time of year. Cheap to buy and simple to prepare, pigeon conditioner can be brought from most decent pet shops and is readily available in bulk bags online.

20Kg dry pigeon conditioner with aniseed can be purchased for around £25.00 from Amazon, this will give you around 40kg of prepared bait once cooked.

Mix this up with Vitalin or particle mix to create a bulk spod mix that is loaded with flavours that the carp cannot resist.

Bread crumb stick mixes

One of my favourite tactics and an awesome cheap carp bait is bread crumb mixes. Simply use a food blender to blend a couple of loaves of cheap white bread.

Add in a couple of handfuls of boilies into the blender or use a Korda Krusha and then add a few drops of stinky fish oils such as The Krill Liquid.

This mix is perfect for stick mixes and creates a cloud of irresistible attraction that the carp love. It’s cheap and easy to prepare and can help instantly improve your catch rate.
